Blue Ribbon Parent Program

Blue Ribbon Parent Program

Dear Parents,

Research shows that there is a positive and convincing relationship between parent and family involvement and student success.  When parents and families are involved in their children’s learning both at home, at school and in the community, their children are academically successful.  When parents, families, educators, and communities work together, all are strengthened and outpace what the individual entities could accomplish on their own. Parents who work closely with the school and community show their children that there is unity and support for their well-being and success.

The Blue Ribbon Parent Program is a unique program that is the results of LPA’s intentional efforts to assist parents to play an active role in their child’s academics and to be a role model for their children in the community, while promoting exemplary parental involvement.

The program is also a part of our community-based effort to assure the success of our school in Lithonia, GA (DeKalb County).  It is implemented as a means of encouraging academic success, promoting self-esteem and establishing a bond between the school and the surrounding community. LPA’s objective with this program is to build a collaborative school, family, and community partnership that positively impacts on the education and social development of students.

The Blue Ribbon Parent Program will recognize parents who have demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to quality education at LPA. Parents who meet the minimum amounts of volunteer hours (20 hours) will be able to participate in the end-of-year celebration.

Fulfill a total number of 20 hours in volunteer service for the school.  Volunteer service is defined as “supporting the school and students and assisting in the development of the LPA footprint throughout Lithonia, GA.” The Blue Ribbon Parents Program is implemented as a means of encouraging academic success, promoting self-esteem and establishing a bond between the school and the surrounding community.

Multiple forms of volunteering are available in the school, in the community, and in the church, including:

1.     Parent University is a parent learning studio that focuses on strategies and activities that will link the parents to the classroom and home environments. A primary goal of the Parent University Program is to educate children by means of supporting parents to be integral co-teachers and providing them with the tools to benefit them to be essential participants in sharing the dream.  The program offers a nine (9) series of workshops per year.

2.     PTO Meetings - The main role of the PTO is to build strong working relationships among parents, teachers and the schools in support of students. All parents are invited and encouraged to join and to provide input at each meeting.

3.     Saturday Parent Academy - The goal of this event is to encourage parents to become more involved in their children's education by attending this weekend session, especially if they are unable to attend during the weekday..  This is also an important step to building and enhancing a relationship between community groups, parents and students. Workshops in internet safety, resume writing, computer skills, technology use, active parenting, and “Cooking with Children”, among others, will be presented. Exhibitions from local agencies will be available.

All volunteer activities must be documented and submitted to the school in a timely manner.  Documentation should include the date, time, and place of each volunteer activity, with the signature of the individual sponsoring the activity.
